Perhaps an exorcism is one of the most iconic occurrences in horror movies. I remember that as a child, long before Netflix and Hulu and it modern movies, I was fascinated by movies about Demon possessions & Exorcisms or anything to do with the occult. The more ancient and mysterious the performed rituals the better. Nothing is better for horror than religious rituals, and in Hollywood horrors, Catholic Rituals have proven to be the most effective. Welcome to the world of the occult: crucifixes, ancient chants, Satan’s clever tricks, and horrific demonic voices. We have listed the best Exorcist movies and demon possessions movies of all time. And we have listed whether they are available on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon or any other streaming service.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
This horror film helmed by Scott Derrickson is not your common exorcism movie. The story, written by Derrickson, Paul Harris Boardman, and Nikhilesh Mehra, is based on the real life story of Anneliese Michel. Derrickson said that he himself believes in exorcism but Boardman is skeptical about the whole thing. These opposing views make for an interesting view presented in the film. The “exorcism” scenes of Jennifer Carpenter were not CGI and no special effects were used. So unnerving is this film that it landed on the Chicago Film Critics Association’s Top 100 Scariest Films Ever Made.

The Rite (2011)

Possession (1981)
Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession received mixed reviews when it came out in 1981. With many different genres in play, it was difficult to peg it as one genre. Penned by Zulawski while going through divorce, it is reflected in the film’s blood and gore scenes. The film is about infidelity and crimes of passion. Quite disturbing, it took lead actress Isabelle Adjani a while to fully recover from playing the role.

The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
Helmed by Adam Robitel in his directorial debut, it follows 3 filmmakers documenting a patient with Alzheimer’s. But of course it is not just Alzheimer’s that causes the patient’s unusually terrifying behaviour. The film received mostly positive reviews, with some critics saying that this film offers a unique take by combining Alzheimer’s with possession. While some psychological thrillers provide a sort of closure at the end of the film, this doesn’t.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Scott Derrickson, the makers claim the film is based on actual events, off the book of Ralph Sarchie and Lisa Collier Cool entitled Beware the Night. It did quite well at the box office earning USD 87 million, with a budget of USD 30 million. However, the fans and critics were not so impressed. It has been dubbed as one of the greatest horror films ever made. Not to mention its impact on pop culture. However, when the movie was released, critics were not so happy with the slow pace of the movie. Insidious (2011)
Insidious by James Wan is Wan’s way of proving that he can create a horror film without much blood and gore. This follows the success of his first Saw movie in 2004. Wan wanted to present the film that will give you a slow, creepy feel, as against a blow-you-out-of-your-mind-over-the-top atmosphere. The musical score is the perfect accompaniment as it is quite subtle but it slowly builds tension. This film was so successful that it became a franchise, coming out with Chapters 2, 3, and 4 (The Last Key). With a budget of USD 1.5 million, it grossed USD 97 million in total.

The cast and crew closely worked with the real Ed and Lorraine Warren to catch details about the story and their character. It was also said that Lorraine Warren visited the set a few times. When the MPAA gave it an R-rating, the producers sought to change it. However, they were told that, if further cuts were made, the story would lose its essence. As it is, the story was “just too scary.” The film came out with a sequel and talks are ongoing regarding a 3rd movie.

Another Sam Raimi film but with Ole Bornedal at the helm, it has an all-star cast led by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Natasha Calis, and Kyra Sedgewick. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Rosemary’s Baby is considered one of the best horror movies ever. This classic was written and directed by Roman Polanski, heavily based on Ira Levin’s novel of the same name. Surprisingly and not surprisingly, it got an Oscar nomination for Best Film. It has several noteworthy scenes that it ranked #3 in 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
